Movie of the Week - Lady Vanishes by Alfred Hitchcock

Another movie of the week by our favorite director Alfred Hitchcock. Lady Vanishes which was shoot in 1938 is adapted from 1936 novel The Wheel Spins by Ethel Lina White. It is one of the last movies of Hitchcock made in Britain before he moved to Hollywood. We think it's a bit unfair that critics while speaking about Hitchcock's masterpieces mostly refer to his films made in America because some of his remarkable works were actually made in Britain. Lady Vanishes displays some of the best qualities director had in his British career.

The story takes place in Bandrika, fictional country in pre-World War II Central Europe. The railway tracks get blocked because of avalanche and delays travelers from returning to England. We see the main characters of the movie in one hotel, some of them get acquainted. Later train resumes and the strangest things start to happen there -  elderly lady vanishes without trace. Fortunately for her, a young woman and her handsome, skeptical companion are willing to investigate the mysterious circumstances.
Director uses the close relationship between humor and horror all along and keeps audience both entertained and confused, really involved in the story.
